Radiant heat panel vs ceramic heat emitter

Compare the complete installation: the space it needs, how it is controlled and the temperatures it maintains. A wattage label alone cannot answer which setup is right for you.

By ReptiRad · European product guidance

Start with the mounting arrangement

ReptiRad uses a flat panel mounted on the enclosure ceiling. Its body is 18.5mm thick, with a footprint that varies by model. Allow additional space for fitting, cable routing and safe separation from animals and décor.

For ceramic heat emitters from other manufacturers, check the specified fixture, mounting arrangement and clearances. Compare the complete installation with a panel, rather than the heater dimensions alone.

Neither a panel’s casing depth nor an emitter’s dimensions describe the full installation clearance. Follow each manufacturer’s mounting instructions.

For heaters and thermostats from other manufacturers, check the exact model’s instructions for compatibility. Voltage, load limits and the required control mode must match the chosen heater.

Rated watts and running costs are different

Rated power describes the electrical input at rated operation. Energy consumption depends on how much power is supplied over time. A thermostat-controlled heater does not necessarily draw its full rated power continuously.

For a simple full-power example, an 80W heater running continuously for 24 hours uses 1.92kWh: 80 ÷ 1000 × 24. Multiply the measured kWh by your electricity tariff to calculate the energy cost. This example is not a prediction of normal ReptiRad consumption.

A fair comparison uses the same enclosure, room conditions, target temperatures, measurement positions and test duration. Record the resulting temperature conditions as well as the electricity consumed.

Choose for your complete enclosure

ReptiRad may suit a setup with an appropriate ceiling mounting area and space for its panel footprint. A ceramic emitter installation must accommodate its approved fixture and safety requirements. In either case, choose around the animal’s temperature requirements and verify the completed setup.

For ReptiRad, start with the panel sizing guide, check thermostat compatibility, and read the installation instructions. If you are replacing an existing heater, reassess the layout and probe position rather than assuming the old arrangement transfers unchanged.
